A life-size video game onstage provides the setting in which the characters must score points and overcome obstacles as they navigate their way through the dangers of their own family.

The Dudleys! features original music performed by a live 8-bit band consisting of classic Atari, Gameboy, and Commodore 64 consoles performing original chiptune songs, a new genre of electronic music in which old video game consoles are hacked and reprogrammed as synthesizers. The Dudleys! pits the two dimensional side-scrolling world of fun and happy endings up against the confusion and aimlessness of real life.

“Both as an innovative work of multimedia/multi-disciplinary theatre and an incisive and introspective exploration of the frail human condition, The Dudleys! has much to offer audiences. It’s one of the most exciting theatre experiences I’ve had this year. And it portends astonishing new directions for Stevens and his collaborators.” —Martin Denton, nytheatre.com

A couple of years ago I was reading a review for the remake of Dawn of the Dead...

Zombie Metaphors

A couple of years ago I was reading a review for the remake of Dawn of the Dead when I stumbled across this quote, “Those who survive in zombie movies are the ones who can kill their memories.” True, true. Whether it be mom and dad or the good times at the shake shack, you better rid yourself of your fond memories or you’re toast. Zombies prey on our struggle and inability to deal with death. It takes years to cope with the death of a loved one but if they’re a zombie you better be prepared to splatter ol’ Dad brains against a wall or you’re gonna be Dad’s next burger. When a zombie infestation breaks out the last thing you want to do is go into your room to pick up some cherished family pictures. Tears? A moment of silence? Bad idea. Zombies wait in dark corners just for moments when your eyes fill with water and you can’t see clearly. Even just looking behind as you run for your life (ala Lot’s wife) will likely get your killed. Zombies are the embodiment of death. You can’t conquer it, you can’t reason with it. It can’t be cured or tricked. It’s always hungry and wants to make you like him. All you can do is run… and shoot it. Okay, so you can’t shoot death but that is part of what makes zombie movies so fun. Watching a zombie recoil from a 12 gauge to the head is very satisfying. Take that Death! I’m still alive!

I’ve always liked zombies as a metaphor more than vampires. Vampires seem like a metaphor for celebrities. Sexy, whispering celebrities with love triangles that will last for centuries. Eternal celebrities who come out at night and whisper into each other’s ears and hiss as if they’re always having sex. Who cares about these elite heartless idols? Give me a hoard of ugly man-hungry zoms any day. Death’s workforce! The proletariate!

Zombies are commies. Vampires are capitalist pigs… or excuse me, free market enthusiasts.

It begins...

We’re about to begin rehearsals which always feels like lighting a fuse and then trying to make a 50 person human pyramid all signing Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring in the round before the bomb strapped to your heart explodes. It’s like Speed. You know, except the villain has stranger demands and is a real Bach fan. Well, we’re about to light that fuse, kids, so put on your safety goggles, hug yourselves around your legs, and count to 100 cause that’s about how long we have to rehearse this beast. Just remember what Peter Brook said, and what Grotowski said, and Eugene O’Neill… just remember what all of them said cause we don’t have time to go over it now. We’ve got to get to the emotional heart of this play before we all die!

Which would be a great idea for an movie. A villain forces a diverse and random selection of people to mount and stage Long Days Journey Into Night to rave reviews in only four days or he’ll blow up Hawaii.

“By God, we’ve got to get off book!!!”
“If I don’t find my objective in the next fifteen minutes Hawaii will be nothing but a smoldering pile of molten rock!”
Keanu Reeves: “Looks like we’ve got some sense memory to do… and fast.”

Side note: I just watched 2012 where, just like nearly every action movie, the characters yell out what they need to do to move the plot forward. “We’ve got to get to the other side of the freeway!” “We’ve got to get this plane off the ground!” “I’ve got to make an emotional connection with my estranged son!”

Anyway, beginnings of rehearsal processes are great because everybody’s excited and feeling like they’re all about to make art. By about the third day it feels more like a cafeteria line. Here’s to art!

Leegrid LIVE at Pulsewave JULY 31st
